As a painter I would classify my two main styles of painting as contemporary figurative and modern abstract. I have always found it hard to put a label on myself in terms of which category my work fits because some of the boundaries are blurred. So maybe I can call myself an 'experimentalist,' because that is what I do, that is my art, just one big experiment mixed with chaos and chance, always trying new ideas, pushing the limitations of the medium. It is about exploration rather than the mastery of one particular medium.
Contemporary Figurative
The term "figurative art" is often taken to mean art which represents the human figure, or even an animal figure, and, though this is often the case, it is not necessarily so. Since the arrival of abstract art, the term figurative has been used to refer to any form of modern art that retains strong references to the real world. So in saying that, I do classify a majority of my work under this umbrella.
