New Assemblage Sculpture Begins

1/16/2011

So this is my new assemblage sculpture I started yesterday. I am really surprised at how quickly it is coming together. I really feel that my creative genius is hanging around at the moment because I have no idea where I get these ideas or how the hell i create what i create...but i don't question it, i just 'allow'. So with this work i am playing around with the body box and deciding what to put inside. I have been playing with several different compositions and as yet have not decided which way to go. Will leave it for a day or so and decide later. But wanted to share with you where it is now!

The Angel Sardine Can Assemblage finished finally!

So I finally finished this sardine can assemblage today! This work has been in process for about 6 or so months and today I finally got it to a stage I could call it finished. I am really happy with the overall design - I like the complexity of the bottom area and the simplicity of the top section. The plastic grass was the last bit to go on and Ii think it just balances out the overall composition.  It also adds a bit of nature to the piece. There isn't a real story to it. It is a shrine and it incorporates religious symbols which I love even though I am not religious. One of my main focuses for this piece was creating that sense of 'balance' and a sense of 'order'. So if you split it down the center each half is almost the same. So as we live in a pretty chaotic world having a shrine to look at which is balanced, evens things out so to speak, LOL. Also the top half is deliberately rather simple and uncluttered whereas the bottom half is busy so your eye keeps jumping up and down the shrine. The plastic grass at the top just give it that slight organic/ link to nature.

Magnetic LED Battery powered Lights for assemblage boxes

So many of you have asked about the magnetic LED's I use inside my assemblages. Well below you will find some images on the type I use. I purchased these (in Norway) from a cheap dollar store type shop! If your in Australia the equivalent would be either crazy clarks or Overflow. I think the images are pretty self explanatory! But if you have any questions, leave then as a comment to this blog. I looked up the website www.x-mile.com but i could not find anywhere online to purchase the lights. The website is not in English either unfortunately but I understand danish enough to know there was nothing about this product! Apparently you can purchase them from Amazon.com

The Box of Secrets- Assemblage Box

Artist Greg Hanson really got me interested in creating assemblage boxes some time last year, and ever since then i have been hooked. For me, the fascination is all about creating a world inside a box. You become like God in some ways, because you have complete say about every minor detail. You bring life to characters, you create the story and landscape. I have always been inspired by magical lands and secret doors. Ever since primary school when our teacher would sit us all down on a Wednesday afternoon, ceiling fan rawing at full speed trying to cool our sweaty bodies down. Us all laying around like lizards hanging on every breath of the teachers lips as she told of a wardrobe which lead into an exciting world of Narnia..a place far from the reality of hot dry country town of Charters Towers.

I feel like a kid with assemblage, i've always said "Assemblage is a grown up word which gives adults permission to play and be like children again". To live our fantasies, to bring them into reality to share with others. This new assemblage i've been working on over the last few days, has been so much fun. It is full of secrets, symbolism and riddles. Looking at this box, it transports me into a mystical world where every and anything is possible. I've called it 'The Box of Secrets' (which is containing a secret inside never to shown unless the box is broken) and I will be unveiling the completed box (and its journey to completion) in my upcoming youtube video which will be a continuation from Part 1 (Eyes Assemblage Box). It will also be going up for sale on my website over the next few days!
